The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) of Indonesia has officially expanded its Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) network to include China. Previously, Indonesia’s PPH framework covered bilateral arrangements exclusively with Japan (JPO) and South Korea (KIPO). Now, with the official launch of the China-Indonesia PPH Pilot Program in collaboration with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), which became effective August 1, 2026, this program is scheduled to run for a five-year trial period. It is expected that this initiative will provide applicants from both jurisdictions with an accelerated examination pathway, significantly streamlining the patent prosecution process between the two nations.
Despite this expansion in scope, the filing requirements and procedural guidelines for submitting a patent application in Indonesia remain unchanged. Applicants seeking to utilize the PPH mechanism must still fulfill standard formal and substantive requirements under Indonesian patent laws, including ensuring that claims sufficiently correspond to those allowed in the office of first examination and submitting necessary examination documents. By leveraging existing examination outcomes without altering fundamental submission criteria, this arrangement aims to enhance administrative efficiency, reduce backlogs, and foster stronger bilateral innovation and economic ties between Indonesia and China.
